Disease trackers are asking U.S. hospitals to help follow a new strain of swine flu and are trying to determine whether it’s related to hundreds of illnesses and 57 deaths in Mexico.

A previously unseen variant of H1N1 swine influenza has sickened at least seven people in California and Texas, the Atlanta-based U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said yesterday. The World Health Organization said 57 people died among more than 800 in the Mexico City region who developed flu-like symptoms in the past month. (Bloomberg)

For people who live in bordering states (TX and CA), this could be a real danger. Many of these folks travel across the border, into Mexico, on a regular basis. Not only are they putting their lives at risk, but also endangering the lives of people back in the US. Anything they “pick up” in Mexico will inevitably come back into the United States … and I’m not referring to curios and candies, either.

I feel that we should use as much caution as humanly possible until it is determined what causes this type of flu, what the initial symptoms are and how we can most effectively prevent it from spreading. I would rather err on the side of caution, than to throw caution to the wind and inadvertently be a part of the problem.

We have paid for a cruise to Merida and Cozamel on the Carnival Cruise lines. I am concerned about going. The cruise lines hasn’t issued any information about not porting here. is this area safe to travel to? And we didn’t buy the cancelation insurance so with this going on are the cruise lines required to refund your money if this is a National High Risk Pandemic if you choose to play it safe? I called the travel angency and they have said everything is ok. What should we do. We want to go on the cruise, a cruise, but we don’t want to get into this Swine Flue. Is there anything I should do? Should we not worry?
